GENERAL TIPS – CELPIP SPEAKING

As the CELPIP exam is recorded and you have only 60 or 90 seconds to speak, it is very important to be well-prepared. It is best to practice under exam conditions.

Understand the Task
- Read the Prompt Carefully: Make sure you understand exactly what the task is asking you to do. Identify whether you need to give advice, describe a situation, or explain something.
- Organize Your Response: Structure your response with a clear beginning, middle, and end. This can be done by following a simple format: introduction, body, and conclusion.
Practice Speaking Clearly and Fluently
- Use Natural Phrasing: Speak naturally and avoid sounding robotic. Use phrases and transitions that make your speech flow smoothly.
- Maintain a Steady Pace: Speak neither too quickly nor too slowly. A moderate pace will help you articulate your words clearly and give you time to think.
Develop Content
- Stay on Topic: Ensure your response is relevant to the prompt. Stick to the topic and avoid going off on tangents.
- Provide Specific Examples: Use specific examples to support your points. This makes your response more convincing and relatable.
- Be Detailed: Give enough detail to fully answer the question. This shows your ability to elaborate on a topic.
Use a Range of Vocabulary and Grammar
- Vary Your Vocabulary: Avoid repeating the same words. Use synonyms and related terms to show your range of vocabulary.
- Use Complex Sentences: Incorporate a mix of simple and complex sentences. This demonstrates your grammatical range and ability to connect ideas.
Practice Pronunciation and Intonation
- Work on Pronunciation: Make sure your pronunciation is clear and understandable. Practice difficult words and sounds.
- Use Appropriate Intonation: Vary your intonation to convey meaning and keep the listener engaged. Emphasize important points and show enthusiasm.
Manage Your Time
- Time Management: You have 90/60 seconds to speak. Practice managing your time to ensure you can cover all your points within the allotted time without rushing.
- Practice with a Timer: Regularly practice speaking within the 90/60-second limit to get a feel for the timing.
Stay Calm and Confident
- Take a Deep Breath: If you feel nervous, take a deep breath before you start speaking. Staying calm will help you think more clearly.
- Confidence: Speak confidently, even if you’re unsure. Confidence can positively influence your performance.
Practical Exercises
- Seek Feedback: If possible, get feedback from a tutor or a native English speaker to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.
